EDITORS' NOTES
_________________________________________________________________
Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of My IBiz Weekly.
This issue is full of tips to help you today so get comfortable
and enjoy this issue.
I finally have Master Subscriber Pro up and running so now
everyone who submits their ezine to the directory can have the
visitors sign up for their ezines right from Ezine Ad Helper
instead of the hassle of clicking on more links. So if you
haven't submitted your ezine to my directory ( not the ad coop,
those are
two different sections) you can do so here
http://ezineadhelper.com/topics/index.htm
Last week we learned how to retain subscribers by learning from
the people who unsubscribes from your list. Today I want to talk
about accepting paid advertisements in your ezine. You will learn
how much to charge, how to accept payments for advertisements,
how many ads should you place and how not to overextend yourself.
I got some good feedback from the article "Learn from your
ex-readers" People are taking the time to let me know why they
are unsubscribing and the irate subscribers have calmed down so
far, so I'm glad that everyone learned from the article. Thank
you
I also have some interesting feedback from three publishers on
their views on the free ad debate that we talked about last week.
I call it a mini tutorial because you sure will want to read what
these publishers have to say.
If you missed last week's issue, please send me a note to
mailto:donesia@ezineadhelper.com?subject=issuemay10 and I'll be
happy to send you a copy.
Well, thank you again for all the wonderful feedback that I have
been receiving regarding the entire ezine series. There is a lot
more left to learn and that's what I am here for. So everyone
have a good weekend, and I will see you on Sunday.
Don't forget the BUY ONE GET ONE FREE SALE on Solo, Top and
Middle Sponsor ads. The regular prices are going up on Friday May
31st so this is the end of the month blowout, so reserve your ad
with another ad free today.

Entrepreneurs online. If you have any Questions, Comments, send
them to mailto:donesia@ezineadhelper.com
NOTE: All articles submitted to me and all ezines to be added to
Ezine Ad Helper will be added, but I am in the process of a major
redesign and transformation of both sites, so be on the look out
for that. That is the reason for the delay in adding the articles
and ezines.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
_________________________________________________________________
Never under estimate anyone. Don't assume that because you are
online then you can do whatever you want and not suffer the
consequences.
I have seen so many scams out there online it's ridiculous. I am
not talking about the usual "Let me build your downline, no money
down" type of ad, but genuine scams. How are they genuine? You
don't realize it until after your money is gone.
Recently VeriSign, the domain registrar company was banned from
sending out false advertisements to domain owners sending them
domain expiration notices saying they need to renew their domain
with VeriSign ( formerly Network Solutions) at much higher prices
than normal.
This is a big company that did this. Wow, now Network Solutions
has had a bad name for a while now. They still have one of my
domain names tied up so long, I finally gave up and said "Keep
it!"
The moral of this story is, when situations like that happen, we
get jaded and don't believe anyone in the business world. We all
go through those times when someone pulls a fast one on us and we
get so mad, you want to smear their name everywhere.
Save it, it's not worth it. Like I've said before..Kill them with
Kindness, not anger.
As we all struggle through our online ventures, please keep your
eyes wide open for those wolves in "Guru's clothing" If you've
never used common sense before, this is the time..

REVENUE PROFITS FROM YOUR EZINE
By Donesia Muhammad Copyright (c) 2002 KDM Publishing
_________________________________________________________________
One of the main reasons why publishers start their own ezine is
to profit from their publications. This is normally in the form
of paid advertisements. Paid advertisements are a great way to
generate revenue for your ezine, but there are some things you
must know first before you plunge ahead.
Generally once your subscriber list reaches around 1,000 readers
then you can start charging for your ad space. Can you start
charging at an earlier stage? Yes, but you may not get the same
response as if your list was larger. Unless you have a highly
targeted list, for instance if every subscriber has been approved
first and all the readers all have an area of expertise in
common.
For instance the list can consist of only publishers, or only
entrepreneurs of the same type of business. Any type of highly
targeted list will offer paid advertisements at an early stage.
There is no need to become greedy and start charging when you
have 50 subscribers. Patience is something you have to learn with
ezine publishing so you can the benefits later.
WHAT TYPE OF ADS CAN READERS PAY FOR?
Generally you have classified ads, and sponsorship ads.
Classified ads are generally free or very low cost due to the
fact that most of these ads are at the bottom and are usually
anywhere from 5-15 classified ads in each publication. Classified
ads are generally 2-6 lines long. Since the exposure for your
ad is very small the price, if any is very cheap. Publishers
often offer bulk deals on classified ads since repeat exposure is
what works in ezine advertising.
Most people who don't like to see a lot of these type of ads
clustered together, since it doesn't distinguish your ad from the
others so they make skip that section. A better exposure for your
ads are what is known as sponsorship ads.
Sponsorship ads are longer than classified ads usually up to 8-10
lines in length and has a better position in your ezine. These
type of ads are placed in the top position as these are the most
expensive because of the readers see these ads first with plenty
of white space around so you are getting more for your
advertising dollar.
Solo Ads are even more specialized since these ads are the only
thing that your reader sees. You can get your point across more
with a solo ad than a regular sponsorship but it depends on how
often the publisher sends out solo ads. Three or four solo ads
per day do not have the same advertising power as sending out a
solo ad a few times a week. So publishers take note since most of
your unsubscribes happen as a result of too many solo mailings.
One of the most common problems which charging for your paid ads
is not knowing what to charge for your ad space.
WHAT TO CHARGE?
This can be a difficult question to ask in the beginning without
looking at other publications of your size. You generally see
lists with a size of 1,000 charge anywhere from $4-8 for a top
sponsor ad, and maybe $3-5 for a middle sponsor ad. Bottom
sponsor ads and classified ads are cheapest due to the position
of those type of ads which are generally at the bottom.
It also depends on how highly targeted your list is. A
specialized list charges almost twice as much as a normal opt in
list due to it's targeted specialization.
Now I have seen some very greedy publishers charging ridiculous
prices which are not worth the price. I have seen one publisher
charge $20.00 for a top sponsor ad with a list of 250
subscribers. This was not a targeted list and I actually laughed
when I wondered how many people would actually pay that high
price for such a small list. Just because you see other
publishers charge $50 or more for an ad check to see how many
subscribers they have and how original their content is.
Once you reach over 5,000 subscribers you no longer have a newbie
list and you can charge $20 ( for example) for a middle sponsor
ad and more. But remember people need more confidence in your
ezine before they decide to pull out their credit card.
HOW CAN MY READERS PAY ME?: PAYMENT CHOICES
Online checks, Third party payment processors, or snail mail are
some of your options. Your readers will pay you the same way they
pay for your products and services. You do have a way for your
visitors to purchase your products right?
Most publishers offer paypal as an easy way to accept paid ads
https://www.paypal.com It is fast, quick and very convenient.
There are other payment processors that you
can use:
Clickbank.com
http://clickbank.com
E-Gold
http://e-gold.com
2 Checkout.com
http://2checkout.com
IBill.com
http://ibill.com
You can also provide a mailing address for your readers to mail
their payment in the form of a check or a money order. Keep in
mind that this is a slower way of accepting payments since you
must wait for the payment to arrive in the mail then wait for the
check to clear. But this method also makes sense in the long
run.
As you grow your list you may end up charging hundreds of
dollars for an advertisement. Most people may not have this
available funds on their credit cards or they may have a daily
spending limit so when you are accepting large payments, this may
be one of your popular payment choices.
A Cheaper Free Alternative: Ad Swaps
You can also swap your ezine ad with another publisher in
exchange for their ad for no charge. This is a great way to meet
other publishers in your niche and to have targeted ads in your
ezine. Since this is no cost to you, you have nothing to lose by
swapping ads with others.
Overextending Yourself
If you offer $15 for a top sponsor ad in your ezine, then you
might figure to go ahead and sell 4 top sponsor ads in each
issue. Hey that's $60 an issue, great huh?
Not really. When people pay for prime ad space they don't want to
see other ads crowding around them. It diminishes the status of
their ad and pretty soon your advertisers may want a refund or
another alternative. It doesn't pay to be greedy with your
profits.
Your advertisers will thank you for that.
WHAT DO I LOOK FOR WHEN I BUY AN EZINE AD?
There are a couple of things I look for and a few questions you
may want to ask a publisher concerning purchasing advertising.
When I look to buy an ad, I first look at the ezine.
1. How many subscribers do they have? some would prefer lists of
at least 2,000 subscribers depending on your ad budget.
2. Are they telling the truth in their actual subscriber count?
It doesn't pay to lie about your list size. Just like those fake
hit counters on website, it just makes you look so
unprofessional.
3. How many ads do they place in each issue? How often do you
publish? If all I see are ads, then the other readers are not
even bothering to look at your ad.
4. What type of payment options do you offer? How hard are you
going to make it for me to pull out my credit card or check to
send it to you.
5. What are your ad guidelines? Are they easy to find or do I
have to go on a scavenger hunt to find your ad rates?
6. What does your website look like?
Many publishers neglect their website in favor of their ezine
only and I hate to break it to you, but if advertisers see that
you are hosted on a free host, they won't want to buy ads from
you on a professional level. They will think that you are
obviously not spending your ad revenue on a web host or a domain
name so why bother??
7. Where are you getting your subscribers? Why are people
subscribing to your ezine?
Did you just buy your entire list? There is nothing wrong with
buying targeted subscribers but you may also not have a good
communication with your readers if you just bought them and threw
them in your list.
Are all your subscribers from an ad coop? Ad coops are a great
way to get subscribers ( I may be bias on this issue since I own
an ad coop) but getting subscribers and keeping subscribers is
another story altogether.
Why Some Publishers Don't Like Paid Ads
A lot of publishers don't offer paid ads in their ezine. What, do
you think they are crazy, that they are missing out on some very
lucrative income. Well Yes and No.
Yes paid advertisements can offer you a steady income stream for
your publication efforts. But think about it, if you didn't offer
ads, then what ads, if any, would you place in your issues?
Your ads, your affiliate products, your services. Get it..
Good now go sell your ads or put your own ads, but do it the
right way for the best results.
"Never compromise your quality for quantity. Don't get greedy
with your profits or you will end up with nothing."

FEEDBACK: PUBLISHER'S POINT OF VIEW: THE FREE AD DEBATE
_________________________________________________________________
Last week we talked about offering weekly free ads or free ads in
general. The pro's and con's of offering free ads is a big debate
amongst the publishers and I heard from three publishers
regarding that issue. Now for all the newbie publisher out there,
this will definitely help you decide what to do about free ads.
Trust me you will learn something new.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
"Hi Donesia,
I think you know my opinion of giving free ads.
I don't like them. Not as a general rule anyway.
I don't even give away free ads to new subscribers
anymore. For me, it has not been worth the time it
takes, and from the feedback I get, my readers
seem to appreciate the fact that I don't.
By not taking the time to put in free ads I've been
able to improve the quality of my ezines. And there's
always room for improvement.
I can't suggest that no one should use free ads in their
ezines. If there is one thing that I have learned, nothing
on the `net is one size fits all.
I've found what work for me, my personality, and my
work schedule. Everyone else is completely different.
What I prefer to do is when I get feedback, I like to
include it in the next issue and include a signature file
or ad with that feedback. I also like to run articles
written by subscribers that they send me.
I'd bend over backwards to help my readers but by
running free ads I'm just helping subscribers.
To me, there is a big difference.
P.S. I Loved what you said about offering too many
freebies and why people unsubscribe.
Though here is what I have found when I get personal:
More people do unsubscribe. But the feedback also goes
up. So I think it's a trade off. Tons of people love a good
talk show.
But you are right. Even that has it's limits. Some day I'll
figure out what that limit is....:)"

Jeff

"Hi, Donesia. First off, I wanted to tell you how much I like
YOUR ezine and how much I value you as a subscriber to mine.
I also want to comment, from an editor's point of view on the
free and paid ads subject. This is from a 2 year stand point of
being the editor of Rim digest ezine and I know other publishers
who I have discussed this subject with who agree and those who do
not, so this is just MHO from my own feedback from my readers.
There is not a better way to BUILD your subscriber base than
offering free ads. Once you have passed YOUR *magic number*,
whether it be 1000, 5000, 10,000 or whatever, you can start
gaining more freedom to make YOUR newsletter YOURS.
What worked for ME, and is said to work for MOST is to offer
unlimited free ads up to a certain point and then change the
policy to ONE free ad per NEW subscriber. You will, of course,
lose those who are only subbed to GET their free ad every week,
month or however often they get one but those are not READERS, as
you find when you drop the endless free ads.
Now that I have almost 30,000 subscribers, I offer NO free ads
and all of my paid ad spaces stay sold out. The readers' feedback
told me when to drop ALL free ones and they said the value of the
paid ads was extremely helped by not having to compete with the
free ones, even though the free ones were much lower down in the
issues.
The other side of this is comments from the readers ABOUT the
free ads themselves. If you have an ad lost in a sea of from 10
to we have even seen 30, whether spread out through an ezine or
all lumped together, how many people are really and truly
bothering to read any of them?
To test this further, I just bought three packages of the "get
your ad seen by 100,000 or more subscribers to ezines by getting
this ad package" programs, ran an ad for more subscribers to Rim
Digest, usually could not even find my ad without doing a search
through the twenty to even forty where it was hidden on some of
the ezines, and to date (May 10) have gotten TWELVE subs from a
total of 300,000+ subscribers seeing my ad! Now that may just be
that almost all of the ezines I had an ad IN also have subs of
mine (with almost 30,000 the odds are very good that I would hit
a LOT of my own subscribers!) but the numbers make me wonder how
many people read my ad or even SAW IT!
I totally encourage those on a budget to use every free and
affordable method of advertising they can find and promote these
huge database reaching ads because they are a great way to get
your ad out to an astronomical readership, I am just not sure
that the VALUE of the ads is perceived as something the readers
care to check out.
I had been in the position of getting people using up to 20 new
addresses to qualify for either 20 SETS of unlimited ads when I
had no limit past one per ISSUE, and the same thing when I
offered one ad per new sub! Now that I do not offer any free ads,
there is no reason for susieq and jimmy bob to use multiple
addresses, so this makes my work load a lot smaller.
Did not mean to write an article but I did want to offer my
insight in case it is needed, lol"

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
"Hi Donesia.
I'd like to know that as a publisher myself I don't
like to offer FREE ads to all subscribers because
those readers usually aren't loyal customers.
They are FREEBIES seekers or people who
want to MAKE MONEY without SPENDING MONEY.
People who want to post FREE ADS are advertisers.
They already have their own biz/ money-making program
and they "THINK" they know the secrets (even mostly
NOT). All they want is to ADVERTISE. They don't
want to learn or read the ezine. I know mostly DO this way!
I usually promote some contests where READERS
can still GET FREE ADS!
As a reader I like to send free ads if there's an option like
that. Usually I promote my ezine ads or affiliate programs
and products I know they worth. I know that free classifieds
don't get good results but sometimes they DO! So why should
I buy an ad when I can send it FREE or BETTER, make a
swap with the publisher!
I usually unsubscribe from ezines that I "FEEL" they don't
DELIVER what I EXPECT to RECEIVE:
- fresh & new content (useful articles)
- something new (original / personal content & resources)
If the ezine don't DELIVER one of THE ABOVE but they
OFFER FREE ADS I stay subscribed.
There are too many marketing ezine out there with GREAT
and ORIGINAL CONTENT (they don't have more than 5 ads per
issue and they DELIVER only 1 or 2 articles/ tips per WEEK)
They don't OFFER FREE ADS!
I'm usually subscribed with only a FEW of that kind of ezines.
I BET there are hundreds of ezines (daily, weekly, monthly)
from TOP MARKETERS who offer ORIGINAL & USEFUL
content. I like them, BUT if I RECEIVE too many per week
I'd have to select what I want to keep and what to UNSUBSCRIBE.
There's too much info out there and I MUST stay FOCUSED... and
keep it short with the reading/learning ..my BRAIN should explode
with the overloaded info I get from the ezines I'm subscribed to.
That's one of the reason I unsubscribe even from some "GOOD"
ezines."
Codrut.

Thanks Jeff, Jan, and Codrut for the very helpful and informative
feedback. Not only did I learn something but I know that my
