TERMS, TIPS AND TRICKS, IT'S YOUR $$$!!

Newer marketers find new terms they aren't sure of and I am
always more than happy to help!
First, some terms and then we can get onto some TIPS for
advertising.
- Solo - Solo is an ad you purchase sent in a single mailing
without other paid ads.
- VIP - Just as the name indicates. It is the very first ad,
below the welcome BUT above even the editors space.
Usually #1 in a table of contents.
- Top Spot - This is prime location in a Ezine. For some
publishers it may be below the editors space, but it will always
be above any other ads.
-CPI - Cost Per Impressions - For premium advertising the going
rate is $1 for every 1000 readers.
Ad Formats:
- 500 Words - This means 500 words, Url's and Email addresses are
each counted as 1.
- 60 Characters - This is 60 characters across including spaces,
commas, periods.
- 5 Lines - 5 lines of the specified width of characters
TIP #1 - BE AWARE OF THESE REQUIREMENTS WHEN PURCHASING AD SPACE.
- 250 words is half the space of 500, is it half price?
- 5 Lines X 60 characters is not the same as 5 Lines - 55
characters, that extra 5 characters could doom your Url.
TIP #2 - DOES THE PUBLISHER ACTIVELY MANAGE A CLEAN LIST?
Publishers offer your ad to their XXXXX number of subscribers.
What is the percentage of failures, what good is an ad to 1000's
if 25% are undeliverable. Especially on Solo's with the cost of
$1 per 1000 of impressions, You could lose 25 cents on every $1
spent.
We are experiencing a 0.4% failure rate, Our solo's go out to
134,000+ for just $87 That is 1540+ readers for every $1.
You save 50 cents on every $1 spent here!
Without subscriber management, a failure rate higher than 5%
could mean a 30 - 50 cent savings on every ad we sell!!!
TIP #3 - SUBJECT LINES - NEVER SUBMIT A SOLO WITHOUT A SUBJECT
We will not accept them without one!
This is a very critical PRIME ad space for Solo's. It can make or
break your ads success. You leave it open for the publisher to
make
use of this space for themselves. They would be a fool not to.
TIP #4 - TEST YOUR LINKS AND EMAIL ADDRESSES!
We check all Url's before sending them, make sure your email
is kept clean so it won't bounce!
Make sure your Url's are valid, make sure your sites are up and
functional, make sure your email isn't full. Make sure what you
send them to see is there. I assure you they won't come back.
YOU GET ONE CHANCE ON THE CLICK, YOU WON'T KNOW IF IT FAILS,
DON'T WASTE IT!
TIP #5 - FRESH AD COPY
If everyone else is sending the same solo ad copy with the same
subject line get something new. There are plenty of good copy
writers out there, invest wisely.

I have some more feedback on the free ads debate. This is from

"From a subscribers point of view
- I DON'T like ezines that are full of ads with very little
content
- I DON'T like ezines that send out solo ads daily (sometimes 2
or 3) I can understand the financial motivation for doing this,
but I'm sure it doesn't do much for paid advertisers if I'm not
reading their ads.
- I DON'T like ezines that don't do anything other than "sell."
It would be nice to have an occasional useful product.
- I DO like ezines that have a consistent format.
- I DO like ezines that are delivered as scheduled. For the
better ones, I schedule my own work around them.
From a Publishers point of view
I think the subject of free ads will always be an open debate and
does have it's pros and cons. Offering free ads is a lot of
additional work for publishers, but for those of us targeting the
newbies niche, I think the least we can do is offer them free ads
while they're going through that learning curve.
In order to do that, I had to find a happy medium. I don't offer
free ads to new subscribers anymore. When you're first starting
out as a publisher, that's great but once you're traffic builds
and you're getting a good number of subscribers regularly, ads
start building up and you also find that as soon as they run, the
reader unsubscribes.
Offering free once a week is not much better. It can be unfair
for the savvy "free loader." You end up running ads for the same
subscribers every week while new ones keep missing out or
delayed.
This is why I offer free ads on an "on call" basis. I let my
subscribers know when it's time to send in free ads and I publish
them on a first-come, first-serve basis. I normally get enough
ads to last a 2 to 2-1/2 months at a time. When I start to run
low, I simply request more. At some point, every ad gets run and
everyone get's a fair shot. This also serves as an incentive for
subscribers who stay with me.
I also had to come up with a way to cater to the free ads as well
as make it worth while for sponsors to purchase ads from me.
That's why I created the weekend edition of my newsletter. I
came up with the idea from my local newspaper. Every day you get
the regular news and headlines and with the Sunday edition, you
get the extra classified inserts and comics.
The regular edition of the Chronicle includes articles,
resources, tips and resources along with 3 sponsor ads and no
more than 5 regular ads. I often use the regular ad spots for
ezine ad swaps with other publishers.
The weekend edition is used for the paid and free subscriber ads.
I tell you one thing that's I've discovered. Since changing to
and then remodeling the HTML format, I've been getting more and
more paid solo and sponsor ad requests.
Of course, with the frequency I publish, I don't expect to make
any more than enough to cover ISP and hosting expenses in any
given month."

Wow, the most amazing thing happened today...
Someone tried to scam us!
Now, I know that sounds horribly naive, but never fear, the
scammer did not win, our internal instincts said WHOA! and
we listened!
You know the old saying, "If it sounds too good to be true,
it IS!" Listen to those old sayings, someone thought them
up for a darn good reason!
Whether someone is trying to make claims to ezine size,
program rewards, and the like, our common sense needs to
be listened to and trusted. That warning bell that goes
off - ringing to beat the band - IS telling you something
- just listen!
Be on your guard. You're surfing along and are bombarded
with $5 programs to make you rich... or by doing nothing,
your downlines will be built for you - you never have to
lift a finger. Hah! RING, RING, RING! It's red alarm fire
time!
My personal belief is that the internet DOES hold
tremendous potential for anyone who'd like to pursue a goal
- financial or otherwise. Just use your head and pick your
battles (I mean programs!) wisely.
Be alert! Many people have said it in many ways, but the
very best thing you could do for yourself is make a big
sign, "If it sounds too good....!" and hang it by your
computer.
Here's to happy successes and less scams on the net. May
you attain your hearts desire - through hard work.
