Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of My IBiz Weekly.
A big welcome to all new subscribers. I hope you enjoy this
issue.
Today I have been removing any bounces and undeliverable
addresses. I have been lenient with the addresses, allowing them
to bounce three times before I remove them since I have heard
from those who are having problems with their email over the past
few weeks, but for everyone else, it's time to clean house.
It doesn't serve any purpose to have a bunch of bounced addresses
except for those who want to exaggerate their subscriber counts.
Speaking along those lines are the quick tips that I have in this
issue about how to get respect from your readers.
I also have part one of Getting to Know your Publisher. I figured
for those of you who are new, you may not really know much about
me and who I am so now you can get to know me a bit better.

Are you tired of the kids asking the neighbors for dinner because
you are stuck online all day?
Is your spouse wondering whether you are going to marry the
computer?
Do you only eat what can fit on the side of the desk next to the
mouse??
No one said that starting out online was easy. Especially for
those who stay at home. Some days you don't think that you will
ever figure out how to handle life online and offline?
You are not alone. We all wish there were more hours available
every day to finish everything, but since it doesn't work that
way, you have to come up with some tips to help you manage those
first months of being a webmaster and publisher.
Quick Tips
Stop Getting Caught Up In Your Email And Finish Your Work.
Yes the emails look interesting, but what about your work? What
pays you more, your work or reading emails?
Think, And I Mean This, Think Before You Pull Out Your Credit
Card.
If it seems like that money is just burning a hole in your
pocket, resist the urge to spend on things you don't need. Do you
need that expensive list host when your list is small?
Do you need that expensive software when you can find the same
quality in a free version?
Do you need to buy all the ebooks out there? What about saving
your money for promoting your products or services, or your
monthly hosting fees?
Organize Yourself
Is your work in the same pile as your children's toys?
Make a space in your home for your office. Even if you can't
dedicate an entire room to your office, clear off a section of a
room for your office, and make sure everyone else in the
household knows this.

Of course you turn on the computer ( if you ever turned it off
from the night before!)

It dawns on you. Just how many affiliate programs did I sign up
for yesterday? I don't even remember the product I am supposed

Kids are at school, spouse is on their way to work and you are in
front of the computer ready to work. You start checking your
email and then...
9 am
You are still caught up in your email. You don't even remember
what you were supposed to do in the first place. Hey isn't it
time to eat. Now what do I eat??
The Webmaster's Breakfast
( Anything that can fit on the side of the desk next to the
mouse!)
Coffee ( a must)
Water or Juice ( while you are waiting for your coffee to cool)
Bagels, Pop Tarts, Toast, a Sandwich
Anything that is bite sized and can be held without a fork!
Don't worry, all experienced webmasters know how to juggle plates
of food on their laps while typing away. Give it a few months,
it'll come to you.
The Webmasters Lunch
The same thing you had for breakfast, just reheated and you are
now on your fifth cup of coffee.
By the time you have eaten, your ISP is down. You and the ten
million other customers who share the same dial up number are out
of luck for the next two hours.
Okay your ISP is back up. Now in the mean time did you do any
work? You don't have to be connected to the Internet to do
everything.
Well you better do something before your children get home and
tell you the one phrase you hope you never have to hear
especially when you are on a deadline
"So Mommy / Daddy, what does this button do..??"
Crash. Your computer is down for the rest of the day...
SO WHAT HAVE YOU ACCOMPLISHED TODAY???
Write down your daily goals
Answer emails from customers.
Processing sales accordingly.
Update at least one page on your site.
Gather some new and interesting information for your ezine.
Jot down some ideas for an article.
Set some ground rules in your home and your business so everyone
fully understands what you are trying to accomplish and that
there are no hidden surprises.
The list goes on and on.
The fact is that it doesn't get any easier, but it is up to you
to decide what battles you want to tackle every day.
There is more time wasted thinking about your goals than the time
you spend achieving them.
In the long run, you will see that computer errors and household
errors are a part of life but also an excuse to not finish what
you started.
Just a quick reminder to let you know you are not alone.
But you may realize that the only person stopping you from your
goals is YOU.

It helps to learn the ropes first before I begin to branch out to
a offline business.
WEB DESIGN SOFTWARE
I am using FrontPage 2000. When I first started online I started
using the site builder that came with Homestead. It is a great
program but once I left I realized that it made it too easy NOT
to learn the basics of HTML. I realized that once I left
Homestead and started to use Frontpage.
Even though the true web developers will tell you that Frontpage
bloats the HTML code, I love it and it is so handy and really
helps when you have a large site and it helps you with the even
the simple tasks. I know that I haven't even used half of the
tools that Frontpage offers, but I have more than enough time to
use them all. Definitely worth the money spent.
WEB HOST
I am currently hosted with Host 4 Profit ( since February 2002)

and haven't had a problem since. They respond to any tech
questions promptly. They are not the cheapest but I have been
through the cheap hosting process and when you are really ready
to get serious you need reliability.
When I first started I used Eclipse Hosting
http://www.eclipsehosting.com
and they are very good for their
price ( starting out at $9.95 ) and it includes phone support
(very good helpful technicians as well) The only reason I left
that host is because they only allowed you to send 1,000 emails a
day and with a growing list I needed more options. Even though my
list is currently hosted on another server, I still want to have
that option available.
LIST SOFTWARE OR SERVICE
I am currently using Aweber for the delivery of my host.

I love it even though eventually I know I might have to find
another option with more than one autoresponder per account but
for now the capabilities that Aweber has is great. Phone support
and the tracking capabilities are great. Once your list reaches a
certain level you want to not only sound professional but you
want your list to look the same way. Aweber suits my needs just
fine.
ANY OTHER TIME SAVING SCRIPTS OR SOFTWARE THAT HELPS YOU HANDLE
YOUR DAILY DUTIES QUICKER.

This is what I use to write
my articles, create my ezines, and just about anything else that
I write. I use the free version and I am very happy with it. This
software is what I use daily.
Microsoft Outlook for my email ( of course) but I also use it to
organize any free ads that are sent to me, and all records of
every subscribe and unsubscribe request that I have ever
received.
Group Mail http://infacta.com
( the free version) for when I send
out any paid ads to my group of publishers. Group mail is perfect
for any type of small list and it helps me to keep thing
organized with the publishers who are part of my ad coop. Since I
have 53 publishers , this makes some of the daily work easier.
AVG Antivirus Program http://grisoft.com
For a program that is
free, it certainly helped me to ward off these viruses that
Outlook seems prone to.
This plus Frontpage is what I use on a daily basis. I also make
sure that I back up all my articles to Microsoft Word and I also
am using Quicken 98 to handle my personal and business finances.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS ONLINE?
Working hard for what you want is what has inspired me to start
something that may or may not work, but the only way I was going
to find out is to take the plunge or spend years regretting it.
I have realized that when I was born nothing was promised to me
except death.
Happiness, Love, Marriage, Children, Money, My Own Business, none
of that is promised. It's up to me to make those things happen
and that is what I plan on doing to the best of my capabilities.
I am a 28 year old stay at home Mom who has been happily married
for seven years now.. I have always wanted to start my own
business because I realized that I couldn't wait forever for my
employers to figure out my hidden talents and knew it was time to
move on ...But to what?
Thank goodness for the Internet. The internet opened up a world
of opportunities for stay at home moms, those who are home on
disability and those who just got tired of the rat race, and
trying to figure out where the line crosses between your job life
and home life even though working at home makes the line very
hard to find, but it's there, just look.
But do you know what realistically made me realize that I needed
my own business. Since I was staying home with my two daughters
and realized that any more children that I may have would only
make day care costs ridiculously high so why would I work just to
pay the babysitter?
Here in the United States, staying home without any income also
means that you are not contributing to your social security. So
that means that when you are reaching the retirement age you
won't have enough to qualify for Medicare or any other benefits
that is your right for working so hard all those years.
So I knew that even though I am a happily married woman you still
need to plan for your future, and to make sure that when I hit
the age of retirement I was going to be secure. Not many people
my age think about these things until it is too late.
I have dreams and ideas and I realized that the only way to see
that happen was to start my own business.
Everyone has something that they would love to do. Their dream
job or skill. My skill is writing. I started writing since the
age of nine and never stopped. To write well means you also have
good communication skills and good negotiation methods that help
you with your day to day activities.
I also realized that I was very good with sales and recruiting,
so I started doing telemarketing a few years back and while it is
a tedious job, i enjoyed the skills that I acquired. Any type of
sales job will help prepare you for your business online. I also
went to insurance school and learned all about how you need to
plan for your future in terms of life insurance, short and long
term disability insurance because you never know what your future
brings you and you have to plan for it as best as possible.
Since I have done telemarketing and customer service, when I get
a nasty email from someone unsubscribing it doesn't phase me
because if you can handle what is said to you as a telemarketer
then you can handle anything!!
WHAT PROBLEMS DID YOU FACE EARLY ON?
Learning the ropes from the ground up. Literally
I used to be pretty good with computers but never got a chance to
learn how to use windows and to use the internet. So what did I
do?
Got myself one of those AOL cd's one of the million that have
arrived in my mailbox and set myself up online. From a publishers
point of view I am not a big AOL fan but when you are starting
out AOL really shows you step by step how to enjoy the internet.
From that point I taught myself the basics of HTML, cgi scripts,
java scripts, web design and newsletter and desktop publishing.
What I glad that I learned was how to use my computer not just
for the internet but for my day to day activities, paying bills,
and desktop publishing. When all else fails, you can always use
desktop publishing to do anything. There are thousands of
business opportunities by just knowing how to type fast, design
resumes, spreadsheets, data entry, the list is endless.
Never, Ever keep all your eggs in one basket.. Always have a back
up plan.
One of the main problems that I faced was trying to balance
between family and home life. Oh the internet can be very
addictive and by the time you turn around, hours have passed and
you wonder what happened to the rest of the day. I have had to
learn when to turn the computer off and to focus on family only.
Then I had to figure out the enormous amounts of scams online.
Wow I thought telemarketing had it's fair share of scams. Online
people try to get away with everything. Crazy. Good thing I am
not quick to spend or I would be in deep trouble by now.
HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR GROWTH?
The only thing that prepared me was the realization that things
don't happen overnight and you have to take things at a
comfortable pace or you will crash and burn very easily.
I didn't overspend myself when I started online. It is possible
to start off using many types of free services but that is only
for the first six months, and then you have to get serious.
Yes it really does take money to make money. They didn't come up
with that slogan for nothing. Depending what you want to do, you
need at least a couple hundred to get started and everything you
make your first year goes right back into the business.
The first thing you need to prepare for your growth is a pen and
paper. You need this to write down what you want to achieve. It
doesn't have to be a formal business plan but it does need to
have the basics of what you want to sell, what is your website
going to do? How are you going to help your customers. Every
visitor is a potential buyer and what are you doing to make sure
they come back again and again.
Get yourself organized is the most important thing or you will
fail before you even try..

"Learn To Give A Little Before You Get Anything Back"
Does it seem as if no one appreciates your publication and your
time and effort and hard work. Week after week you send out your
issues out of the goodness of your heart and fully expect every
week to enjoy the profitable reasons that you started this
newsletter in the first place.
Well guess what if that is the only reason you started this, then
you will be disappointed. I have seen some newsletters pull every
trick in the book.
What type of tricks..
The kind that makes you wonder why you are even subscribed to
them in the first place.
Publishers Who Lie
You know what I am talking about
One week they have 2000 subscribers,
next week they have 5000.
Of course you can easily buy that many subscribers but wouldn't
it be in your best interest to let your readers know this?
But that isn't the problem, there are those who lie big time
about their subscriber count only to charge high prices for paid
ads. Unethical, yes, but too common these days.
I appreciate those who are honest about what they do and how they
conduct business online. And that includes your ezine list as
well.
Pretending To Be Someone You Are Not
Don't invent illnesses for sympathy.
Don't invent families where there are none.
So what if you are not always the "Life of the Party" That
doesn't mean that you can't produce a quality ezine.
But do you know what bothers me the most.
Don't create hardships to gain money from your readers.
If you are really in need, then this has nothing to do with you.
I have known many publisher who have gone through hard times and
they needed help. I am not talking about these helpful
publishers.
Don't lie about all these bad things that are happening in your
life and because of this that is why you have to charge 50
dollars for your list of 500 subscribers.
Remember the kid you went to school with that always told tall
tales. You would think that they would make a movie of the week
based on his life story.
Then you found out that the kid was lying. Not intentionally, but
he didn't like his own life so he wanted to make everyone think
it was.
Hey I'll be the first one to tell you , my life is the same day
after day. Work, family, work, family but I am not going to start
making a "Better" ezine by lying.
"Oh well I just came home from spending that million dollars I
made last week submitting my free ad to thousands."
Oh Give Me A Break!!
Contests and Freebies
Don't tell your readers that you are going to give them a free
ebook or a free ad and don't live up to your promises.
Don't tell them that you are giving away cash if you are not
going to deliver.
If you feel that running a contest or raffle is too demanding on
your time and you can't live up to it, then stop, plain and
simple, stop.
All The World Is One Big Ad
What is also annoying are those publishers who every week, they
tell you about a different product that they are using and love
it to death, when they don't even know what the product does in
the first place.
Oh yes I use this list server all the time ( product #1), and I
wouldn't use anything else

Trust Me..
No you don't have to own every product to endorse it. It does
help but if not, don't lie about it. Just be honest.
I can go on and on about the unethical things online but then
again are you in the mood to read a 10 page article??

TIME TO LAUGH...

I was traveling back to my hometown and decided to stop at one
of those rest areas on the side of the road.
I went into the washroom. The first stall was taken, so I went
into the second stall.
I had just sat down when I heard a voice from the other stall.
"Hi there, how is it going?"
Okay, I am not the type to strike up conversations with strangers
in washrooms on the side of the road.
I didn't know what to do, but finally I said, "Not bad." Then
the voice said, "So, what are you doing?"
At this point, I was starting to find the situation a bit weird,
but I said, "Well, I'm headed east."
Then I heard the person, all flustered, say, "Look, I'll call you
back.
Every time I ask you a question, this idiot in the next stall
keeps answering me!!!"
