Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of MIBW.

Well today's issue is packed with information so I won't talk you to death here :)

I am back in the swing of my article writing. I had to do some inner cleansing to get myself back on track with myself, my family and my business. The results is this issue which is here to help you not throw a sales letter down your throat.

Speaking of sales letters. Besides reading long sales letters which I can't stand, why do I have to look so long and hard just to find the price? Seems like an annoying sales method to me instead of a good move. Any thoughts mailto:donesia@ezineadhelper.com

I have a new weekly column for you by one of my readers Virginia Rounding. I received such great feedback on her article on Grammar writing for the web that I asked her to start a weekly column for MIBW and she graciously agreed. Thank you Virginia. Please visit Virginia's site and sign up for her newsletter, you won't be sorry. http://VirginiaRounding.com

I also have Part 5 of the My IBiz Series. Today we will deal with Domain Names and Web Hosts. In a roundabout way you will get some great tips on choosing web hosts, and moving web hosts, and why what may be right for one business may not be the host for your business.

I also have a new offer for you from Glen Gordon. This is a joint effort between Glen Gordon and myself and I was able to grab a great discount for my readers. Read about that in the Hot Off The Press section.

In the Quick Thoughts From Your Publisher section, you will see the specifics of what I use everyday to run my business.

And finally there is a great article that I wrote. An ode to Newbie Publishers. You can read why I love new publications.

Like I said, no long speech because there is a lot of information in this issue for you already.

Enjoy and please have a safe and happy week and I will see you on Friday for our classified edition.

Don't forget about the Tools For Your Biz Contest which got off to a roaring start last week, and the new ad specials for February.

Yours Truly,

VOICE YOUR OPINION
_______________________________________________________________

Do those start page programs really work?
What about sites that bring you traffic for a cost?
Does any software handle traffic and promotion for you?

Send your answers to mailto:donesia@ezineadhelper.com?subject=voiceyouropinion

RESPONSE:

Hi everyone!

My name is Jackie Martin and I'm responding to the question about start page programs and whether they really work.

I've belonged to a couple of start page programs for about 3 months now, and even with "buying" some of the traffic, I've not really noticed where it has helped with sales. But then, I have corresponded with others on this topic, and the key is joining 4-5 of the programs, and making sure you spend about two hours a day opening your browser to each one to ensure you are getting a large amount of exposure for yourself.

As a side note: There is a program called Crazy Browser, where you can open up to six windows at a time (which helps). It is a free program and can be found here: http://www.crazybrowser.com if you care to continue this avenue of advertising.

Quite frankly, I got tired of trying to do two hours a day with it!

What I've found that works even better is a FFA (free-for-all) site.

Here's the concept:

People post their link (free) on your site.
When they post, they have to submit their email address.
They have to accept the terms that they will receive email from
you for the free posting. This builds you a leads database that you are able to email them about your product/service.

I have found this to be more beneficial than start pages and there are several "free" FFA systems out there.

Although I'm currently paying for a new marketing system, I've
found it's one of the simplest, user friendly, in-depth systems
out there and I've found so far, that it's been worth every
penny!

Some of the things to look for in a program if you're going to
spend your hard earned cash:

Generates leads.
Automatic follow-up.
Makes your presentations.
Signs them up in your business.
Trains them for you.

The only thing I do everyday is click a few keys to send my already gathered leads to my autoresponder. And all my classified ads, FFA submissions, and search engine submission is all done "under one roof". No flying all over the internet trying to find those free submission places!

So, bottom line is, you have the option of doing your start pages and hoping to get some results OR spending a little out-of-pocket expense to get guaranteed results.

Hope this helps,

Jackie Martin

QUICK THOUGHTS FROM YOUR PUBLISHER
_______________________________________________________________

Tech Support is a great thing to have. Especially when you are about to pull your hair out. But what about when you just want to find out how to fix something from an ordinary person.

I realize that there are times when I have a problem, whether it is major or minor with my computer, software, host, email software.. tech support can't answer those questions about products that they have nothing to do with.

That is when I rack my brain trying to remember who online has the same software that I use and get in touch with them about how to fix it.

There are great discussion lists out there for just about every product out there but when you just want to ask a one on one question....

Normally people turn to the publishers of the newsletters they are subscribed to.

Some publishers are so secretive about the tools they use, you can barely get a simple email out of them.

So I decided that you should know what software I use, and other useful applications that I use to get by online on a day to day basis. I am also including how long I have used each product.

Because there have been plenty of times that I have asked someone a question about a product they are endorsing or claim to use and you get one of those " oh I just bought it for the resell rights, so I have no clue how to use it."

This way when you have a problem with one of your software products, at least you can say " Well I know Donesia uses this product, let me see if she knows why this is happening."

DONESIA'S STUFF :)

WEB DESIGN SOFTWARE: Frontpage 2000
( I have used this software for 1 1/2 years now) I love Frontpage, and don't give me any of those " It bloats the code" speeches :)

The only way I would change is when they reduce the price for Dreamweaver :)

I also use Arachnophilia ( 1 year) to edit cgi and php files and to view the source code of web pages.
I also have Coffee Cup HTML Editor, but I am a novice on this product.

WEB DESIGN TEMPLATES: There are two main place where I buy my Frontpage templates.

Outfront.net http://outfront.net
The Template Store http://thetemplatestore.com

EMAIL CLIENT: Outlook 2000 ( 1 year )

WEB HOST: Host 4 Profit ( 1 year )

GRAPHICS PROGRAM: Microsoft Image Composer ( 6 months)
I am just learning Xara Web Styles, and Corel Draw 8 so I am a complete newbie on those products. But not for long.

TEXT EDITOR: Edit Pad Lite ( still too cheap to buy the pro version )

EZINE LIST SOFTWARE: Autoresponse Plus ( since December 2002 )
I have also used extensively Rapid Reply.net, Aweber, and Group Mail.

I use Group Mail ( the free version) for all the mail sent to my publishers in my ad coop.

FAX SOFTWARE: Symantec Win Fax Pro 10 ( since October 2002 )

WINDOWS : Win 98 ( second edition) ( 2 years plus)

ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE: AVG software http://grisoft.com
( September 2002)

ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE: Money 2002, and Quicken 98

WORD PROCESSING: Microsoft Office 2000

So whenever you are stumped, just give me a yell. I'm sure there is at least one product you are using that I use and I am always available for questions.

MY IBIZ SERIES PART 5

Domains and Web Hosting.... Learn First Before The Mistakes
______________________________________________________________

This is Part 5 of a series to help you get started online with your business. If you have not read the previous parts, you can read it online here http://www.ezineadhelper.com/myibiz/

A detailed list of each part of the My IBiz Series can be found at the end of this article.

In this section of the My IBiz Series, we are going to look at domain names and web hosting..but in a backwards sort of way.

You see I know many of you are aware of the whole process of getting a domain name and getting a web host. The problem lies in understanding the process of it all, and because of this it gets so frustrating for you.

So instead of focusing on how to obtain domain names and web hosting ( which will be discussed in Part 6 ) but this series is more about tips that no one bothers to tell you when you get your first host and/or domain name or move to another host, or domain registrar. It's not just about throwing a million affiliate links to a bunch of web hosts, but some helpful advice.

By the way if you are not familiar with the terminology that is in this series, just look at these simple definitions on domain names and you will see what I mean:
http://www.domain.com/glossary.html

QUICK TIPS WHEN OBTAINING A WEB HOST

==> Always get references from Clients. Not the ones that they recommend ( they may be paid references) Get the good, bad and ugly about their services.

Check to see if they have a public forum for its clients. Then you can really see what major and minor problems they may have and how will it affect your business.

==> Check to see if they are Resellers. If they are not the true owners of the service, but a reseller, they may not have access to all the features should any problems arise.

There is nothing wrong with Resellers but before you go sending them irate emails, the problem may be beyond their control, so be patient like everyone else until the problem is fixed.

==> Yes, believe it or not, you will go through a few web hosts before you choose one that fits your needs. Just as you will go through a bunch of different list hosts and list software until you choose as well. So don't fret, it's just trial and error.

==> YOU DO NOT, I repeat, YOU DO NOT have to register your domain or transfer your domain to your current Webhost. If a Webhost insists that you transfer or buy your domain from them only. RUN, don't walk, because more than likely they are going to own your domain and you will have no claim to it.

The majority of web hosts have excellent reputations but for those few that make it harder for the honest business, is what you have to steer clear of.

If you use a domain registrar then all you have to do is change the DNS ( Domain Name Server ) information and it will travel to whatever host you choose.

I prefer to manage my own domains myself instead of going through the hassle of switching every time I find a host.

==> Don't be afraid to ask someone how long they have used that particular web host or domain registrar. Someone can give you a glowing recommendation but end up never using the product, so ask first.

My Webhost Host 4 Profit http://www.host4profit.com/cgi-bin/home.cgi?14508 is a service that I have used for exactly one year and have no plans to move anytime soon. Reliable support, great service and professional. Can't beat that.

My domain registrar is Go Daddy http://godaddy.com I have used Go Daddy for a year and a half now. I have 6 domains with Go Daddy and the price is right, the service is great, and it is easy to understand without any fear of my domain getting ripped off.

Nothing is perfect but I am happy with it. If it isn't broke, why try to fix it.

WHY DO PEOPLE SWITCH WEB HOSTS SO OFTEN??

Changing Prices

Many people switch just to get in on deals ( for example, if a host is offering a two month free deal, they leave once the free is gone) They don't care how many times they switch, they want the best deal.

These are people who are not serious about their business, just FREEloaders.

Poor Customer Service

If you can't get a response to a sales question before you buy, then that will give you an indication of the services once you do sign up.

If they have a public forum and every client is talking about getting their lawyer involved, it's time to move on.

When your site is down for no reason and you don't even get an email about the problem for days on end, its time to move.

A great place to check to find out about good and bad web hosts is to go to Web Hosting Talk, http://webhostingtalk.com a forum where you can find out about who is really a good Webhost, and not because they have a good affiliate program.

Different Needs

My first web host was a company called Eclipse Hosting. They were great. Toll Free Phone Support, all the bells and whistles that I needed. So why did I leave?

They only allowed me to send no more than 1,000 emails on their server daily. As a growing ezine publisher, once I hit that 1,000 mark on my readers, I knew I had to move.

Now I could've just stayed there and used a list hosting service, but I need to have that option open to use a list software on my server because your needs will change.

The key is to find a host that TAILORS TO YOUR TYPE OF BUSINESS.

If you have a high traffic site, why do to the cheap web hosts. You know they have a low price because they don't expect people to exceed their bandwidth or clog up their email servers.

NOTE: Please don't fall for those "unlimited bandwidth" deals. Because you will think it's unlimited until you see your hosting bill at the end of the month and it may be in the hundreds, and you are wondering how did that happen.
There are web hosts that cater to high traffic sites, heavy email overloads, etc.

If you are an ezine publisher, ask other publishers what they use for their hosting.

Not every cheap web host is for you, and also not every expensive one may be right for you.

I chose Host 4 Profit because I asked other ezine publishers what service they used.

I didn't ask someone who isn't in my line of work or they may not understand.

QUICK TIPS WHEN MOVING YOUR SITE AND DOMAIN

Moving your site to a new host is just as stressful as moving in real life. But not if you take heed to these simple steps to make your website move a lot easier.

==> Always have a backup copy of your site on your computer. Depending on how often you update your site, you should back up your site every week or every 2 weeks.

You will need this backup to put on your new host once it is ready.

==> Don't assume you can buy an account on Wednesday and expect to have your site up and running by Friday.

You have to get used to their control panel, and every web host has a different panel to get used to.
You have to switch over and upload the scripts you use, and the databases you may have. Then you have to set up your email and configure it with your email client. Again these are always different instructions.

==> It takes anywhere from 48-72 HOURS FOR YOUR DOMAIN NAME TO TRANSFER TO A NEW HOST.

That means in the meantime your email will be DOWN. So your important email will not get through. Let your readers know of the web host change. Let your important clients know of this change. If you can put a hold on some of your newsletters or can change your address, then do so. Because then your email will bounce and depending on the list software, you may be removed from that list, so prepare well.

==> Keep copies of:

Any scripts you may use on your site. You may have forgotten how you installed it, so keep the instructions and the original files. Don't forget to change any perl, full directory paths, or mysql codes in the script so they will function on your new site.

Any autoresponder messages that you use. You may have to add them all over again so be prepared.

Now that you know these tips, you don't have to stress so much on finding a host and you can now narrow down your choices.

After all, would you move without investigating the area first ??

So why do you expect your business to live anywhere??

This article may be distributed freely as long as the above resource box is included.

NEXT WEEK, we will look at some great web hosts, sites to find more information on web hosting and domain names, and what exactly are your needs when looking for a domain name and web host.

Also once and for all, I will explain why you DO need a domain name to survive online.

WEAVE WELL: WRITING TIPS FOR THE WEB

'When A Penny's Not A Penny'
By Virginia Rounding
_______________________________________________________________

NOTE: This is a brand new column for MIBW from one of our readers, Virginia Rounding.

Please visit Virginia's site http://www.virginiarounding.com and sign up for her ezine, Poetry Competition Updates. Tell her Donesia sent you :)

We know when we’re writing for an internet audience that, in theory, that audience speaks, understands and uses a multiplicity of languages and that we may be losing out on potential customers if we only use one language and don’t get our ads, articles and web sites translated.

In practice, both because we’re busy and because we don’t have spare funds, we use English and assume that all our readers will understand us – and by and large, fortunately for us, they probably do. Nevertheless, because we’re writing in English, our biggest potential markets are those in the United States and Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Now on the whole, people on both sides of the Atlantic speak the same English – if not all of the time, at least when we’re doing e-mails and ‘internet speak’. We Brits (I live in London, UK) are just about used to the idea that American English dominates the web, and on the whole we don’t mind and we join in with it.

Occasionally we still sound a bit more formal than our friends across the pond – but, by and large, we speak the same language. When I did some work for Microsoft, for instance, I got used to being addressed as ‘you guys’, even though previously my English sensibility had told me that a ‘guy’ was male (and I’m not). (I was working on ‘localizing’ Microsoft Money for the UK market, if you’re interested – a very entertaining way of spending a few months, turning ‘American English’ into ‘English English’.

I think at times our little team of Brits sounded very stuffy. For instance, when you Americans successfully install Money, the dialogue box says ‘You’re done!’ In our uptight British version, it says ‘You have finished!’ Ah well – maybe we’re still rather attached to the bowler hat and the rolled up umbrella…)

Anyway, most of the time we do speak the same language on the internet. Just occasionally it goes a bit adrift, however. I have a great respect for the e-books and e-courses produced by Jimmy D. Brown, for instance (I must have – I sell them off my web site), but I must admit that I’m always amused when I read his slogan at the top of his e-books: ‘In less than three minutes – without spending a penny – you can be receiving your first lesson of this powerful 7-day eCourse…’

Why does this amuse me, every time? Because ‘spending a penny’ is the well-loved euphemism of my parents’ generation for what Americans might call ‘going to the bathroom’ or ‘restroom’ or, less euphemistically (if Donesia will forgive me for being so vulgar in her wonderful ezine), ‘taking a pee’.

When I was a child, in most public conveniences in the UK you had to put a penny in the slot to open the door of a cubicle – hence ‘Excuse me - I must just go and spend a penny’. And I presume that Jimmy D. Brown does not mean that I can receive his e-Course without having to go to the loo first… If he were to say ‘without spending a dime’, I’d know just what he meant and wouldn’t feel at all insulted that he was using American currency.

So, my point behind this light-hearted observation is that you never know what you might inadvertently be saying to amuse, instead of impress, your potential transatlantic customers. And given that we’re the biggest market for one another – and there’s a lot of potential in the UK as we always seem to be one step behind the Americans in these internet things – it’s worth getting a contact on the other side of the pond to cast his or her eye over your ad, article or e-book before you unleash it on an expectant world.

If you’re American and you’d like an English eye cast over anything you’ve written, feel free to contact me at mailto:webmaster@virginiarounding.com . And, if you’d like to receive that really valuable e-Course ‘without spending a penny’, then send a blank e-mail to mailto:vrounding@followup101.com. Could save you a few trips to the bathroom.

WHY I LOVE NEWBIE PUBLISHERS
_______________________________________________________________

By Donesia Muhammad
Copyright (c) 2003 KDM Publishing

In the past year of publishing, I have seen a lot of new ezines come and go.

Some were great but they just didn't imagine the time and energy involved in maintaining a newsletter so they quit.

Others just weren't in the right frame of mind to handle publishing on a schedule.

But then there are those who are still here and still sticking it out.

You know what I realized..

You Can Always Spot A Newbie Ezine..

Why?

Because they always have such heart and integrity.

New Publishers take the time to research every article, every link in their publications. They find sites no one else can find. They find so much helpful information for you.

Now of course I am not knocking veteran publishers.. of course not. But it is refreshing to see the world through a new publisher's eyes.

You can read the enthusiasm in each word.

They are not worried about:

Sp^m filters
Backlog of Free Ads ( They love free ads )
Re-Using the Same Old Articles
Whether their List Server is Down ( they start out with a small number of subscribers so no biggie)
Low Ad Sales
Solo Ads
No Feedback

They appreciate all opinions from fellow publishers.

They don't bombard you with ten thousand downline builders, or a bunch of scam programs to join.

They care.

You see it is very easy to get burned out publishing. Deadlines, ad sales, sp^m filters, bad feedback can take it's tole on us.

Pretty soon frustration sets in and we get tired of the business.

Whenever I get fed up, what I do is read a newbie publication and I appreciate the things that I would take for granted.

I want to thank all the New Publishers out there.

Who Jump For Joy When they hit 1,000 subscribers.

Who Jump For Joy when they get their first sale.

Who Jump For Joy when they get that first piece of good feedback.

Who Jump For Joy When instead of getting mad at people unsubscribing, they take the time to make their next issue even better.

So the next time you go through the motions of putting together your newsletter and you feel like rehashing the same old stuff, ( what I call a "Copy and Paste Issue"), go read one of the newer publications.

You will see that competition is here and you either sink or swim.

It's like looking at life through a baby's eyes. Everything is bright and rosy.

Thank you for helping the old publishers feel new again.
