Hi, everyone. Welcome to our Classified Edition of MIBW.
Okay March is tomorrow, wasn't it just January? As usual, by the time we turn around the summer slump is here and we are scrambling.
What is the Summer Slump?
That is when sales get slow as molasses sometimes. This usually occurs around mid June through August. You start to think its you but its everyone.
So that means when sales are jumping in the spring time, you have to have a great marketing campaign set up to weather the storm of slow sales.
Well how the heck do I do that?
Don't worry we will all learn how to maximize ourselves through good sales copy, great web copy, and great ads.
Now that we are becoming more aware of the scams online, we can at least get a heads up on what to look out for.
Tuesday I received some good feedback on those crazy refund scams and other scams out there. Stay tuned for that.

HOW MUCH DOES YOUR FREE AD COST YOU?

Ever considered the cost of your free ad? Most likely we
cancel the cost we incur when we place a free ad.
You must spend some TIME and energy (brain energy at least)
composing your ad. Occasionally we luck out with a bright idea! Most often we spend days thinking and reciting in our head some of the wonders of our product or opp. Perhaps we are diligent and we take the TIME to write our brilliant ideas on paper and, even better, we read them out loud several times to see how they may sound to someone else. Ever tried your ad copy out on friends or family?
Next we spend TIME searching for the fr'ee opportunity to place our ad. There are many. This information highway we call the net, can boggle you down with the availability of opportunities, and you can easily get waylaid into another 'avenue' during your quest. This takes up TIME you meant to spend searching for that fr'ee advertising opportunity. There are many: safelists, faa,& classified sites, ezines and more.
Then you have to take the TIME to post your ad in all the available slots you find. The task can be simplified with the copy and paste feature. It is still very TIME consuming as you don't always wish to place the same ad and, viola' , you may get a brilliant idea in the process and compose fresh ad copy while you work! Nice, huh?
But wait, there's more! You have to make the TIME to find your ad when it is posted to see a) how it looks in print, b) how it sounds (?) in print, c) was it edited? or the way you composed it?, d) did it run? Depending on how many places you posted your ad, this could take a considerable amount of your TIME.
How much is your TIME worth? I would guess you would be quite
an expense to someone who was hiring you to spend your TIME,
energy and expertise to do a task or provide a service to them. You and your TIME are the most valuable assets to your biz. Did you stop and think, while doing your tax return, that you do not get to claim the TIME you spent promoting your opp?
Yes, you are 'allowed' to calculate your expenses for equipment and advertising and more. You are not allowed to factor in your TIME. Unfair of good 'ole Uncle Sam but that is the way it is. Your TIME spent placing those FR'EE ads is costing you money and you cannot claim it as a business expense. Perhaps the cost of purchasing a slot for your ad is not such a bad idea. Paid advertising is tax deductible. All you have to do is collect the receipt. Smart move for 2003.

Too many small business owners today run ad campaigns that get
little to no results, and they have no idea why. When you have
the knowledge to troubleshoot the poor responses, you also have
the knowledge to make the needed changes so that - next time -
your sales improve! Let's take a look at the breakdown of an ad campaign, and how to determine what went wrong.
Response vs. Results
It's important to understand the difference between response rate and results. When a customer takes the action you want him/her to take (i.e., clicking to your site, calling your 800 number, etc.), then you've achieved "response." This does NOT mean you've made a sale. The response rate of your ad campaign can be high without ever selling one product or service.
"Results," on the other hand, are the sales you make in
conjunction with the response rate. When a customer takes the
action you want him/her to take AND buys your product/service,
then you've achieved results.
No Response
When you get little to no response, chances are that one of two
things happened. One - your ad was poorly written and didn't
generate enough interest to excite the customer to take action;
or two - the ad didn't reach your preferred target customer.
How do you determine which one is the culprit? Test! Use the
same ad, but place it in a different ezine or on a different Web site. If response rate improves, you know the ad is most likely fine, but the audience exposure was off. If the response rate does not improve, it's probably best to rewrite the headline, the ad, or both.
Response But No Results
If you run an ezine ad, banner ad, etc., and get responses
without making any sales, the most probable theory is that your
supporting ad copy or offer is not doing its job. Ezine ads,
banner ads, and the like will never make a sale on their own.
The customer is almost always going to be directed to click back to your Web site. If the copy/design of your ad is working, but no sales are being made, take a good look at the copy or design of your site. Chances are that *it* could be costing you sales.
Again, testing is the key. Change a headline, add links that
direct to "more information" pages, and so on. Run the ad again, and see if your results improve.
You'll notice that in either case, testing is the recommended
course of action. So many small business owners get in a hurry
and neglect to test their ads. While it may seem costly to run
an ad, change an ad, and run it again - the truth is that running unproven ads all across the 'Net without gaining any return on investment (ROI) is a huge waste of money.
Yes, it does take a good deal of time. Yes, it can cost
additional money. However, once you've taken the time to test an ad, and the copy on the supporting Web site that customers will be directed to, you'll be in a much better position to ensure consistent sales from your campaigns.
