My IBiz Ebook Series: Part Three...
Designing Your Ebook the Right Way

This is Part Three of an Ebook Series designed to show you how to
create, design, market, and promote your ebook the right way, not
the hyped up way.
Today we are going to continue with our discussion on the best
selling methods for your ebook along with tons of links to get
you started with your ebook.
By now you should have an idea on what to put in your ebook.
Maybe you want to put your ezine archives into an ebook. Or you
want to put all your articles in one ebook as well.
What about any courses or tutorials you may have, or maybe you
are great at finding great helpful sites online. Good, then put
that in an ebook as well.
For the purpose of this tutorial I have decided to use one of my
tutorials for my first ebook. I am going to use the My IBiz
Series.. How to Get Started Online. I am also going to combine it
with my ezine tutorial and this tutorial as well so that should
be done in a few weeks.
Last week, we discussed the pro's and con's of resell rights and
master resale rights.
What about those who just want to have an affiliate program for
their ebook?
Well, that is simple enough. If you are not already a Clickbank
member, and who isn't, then sign up here for a Clickbank
nickname, which is free. http://clickbank.com
Now in order to be able to sell with your Clickbank account, you
need to pay the 49.95 processing fee and then you will be able to
accept payments for your products.
If you are selective on who you would like to sell your product,
then set up a form for those who want to become an affiliate and
then you can approve them at that point.
It is important to protect your links. If you have ever sold
through Clickbank, then you know how easy it is for someone to
replace your nickname with their own, and therefore you do not
get your commission for the sale.
What I use for my ad services coop is a script called Clickbank
Manager to protect my own links along with the links for my

The methods to make money from ebooks are vast.
Affiliate programs are perfect for ebooks. Even if you are not
giving them 100% of the profits, a generous commission really
helps to get others to promote your ebook as well.
Remember don't just jump onto every affiliate program you see
just because of a high commission.
Lately it seems that a lot of us are really looking into the
products we promote because it does come back to haunt you when a
product doesn't live up to it's expectations.
If they cant reach the owner, who do you think they are going to
email?? You of course, so be careful and don't be afraid to ask
questions first.
MAKE THINGS EASIER FOR THE RESELLER OR AFFILIATE
Before you jump on the reseller or affiliate bandwagon, here are
some tips for all ebook authors who offer resell rights and for
those who have an affiliate program.
This is from someone who has spent a lot of time reselling
ebooks, and I have seen the good and bad of it all.
If you are going to sell an ebook, you should offer the ebook in
a zip file for faster downloading.
The website and graphics should be in another download in case
you don't offer resell rights to everyone who purchases your
ebook.
In that zip file, there should be:
A READ ME FILE
( please don't make me search for simple information such as
contact info, the terms of the resell rights, and instructions on
how to upload the site and graphics to my site )
GRAPHICS FOR THE WEB PAGE
( no huge files, just nice clean graphics to help me to promote)
THE WEB SALES PAGE
( this should be a simple page without tons of scripts that may
not be compatible with my html editor. Don't assume everyone can
put together the scripts you may offer so please keep it simple)
> Don't Offer Resell Rights now, and then give them away to your
readers later on down the road. That undermines the affiliates
who spent the time, energy, and money promoting your product.
If you decide to offer it free, then let your affiliates know
firsthand instead of reading it in someone's ezine weeks later.
I know many people don't take the time to reads the terms and
conditions but if you put simple rules in your terms and
conditions, it saves you a load of customer service emails.
> If you are offering a way for your affiliates to rebrand your
ebook with their own links, then please put clear instructions on
how to do this. I can't tell you how many products that had
instructions that were too confusing and you just eventually said
forget about it.
> Offer them a few ebook cover graphics and banners as well.
Ebook covers and banners along with some pre-written ads really
help you to sell and sell big. We can't just figure out how to
sell your product so help us out and in turn your sales will
thank us for it.
> Make things easier. Not all of us know how to install php
scripts. I am getting fairly well with php scripts but a lot have
no clue how to upload a php script.
Please state on your sales letter if it is a script and what
language the script is written. Nothing aggravates a customer and
also gives way to more refunds, if you are not clear in your
instructions as to what to do with the product once you download
it.
Assume everyone is a newbie who buys your product.

EBOOK DESIGN
Okay now that we have gotten through all the technical stuff,
lets start to compile the ebook together.
I am going to provide some links for you to get started with your
ebook. Next week we can go into some more technical details on
getting the design of your ebook together.
First we need an html editor to actually create the pages.
Now you can always just use the same editor that you use now on
your site. I use Frontpage 2000 so I will use that for my ebook.
This should not be a hard thing to accomplish since you already
have a website so the software is just sitting there on your hard
drive waiting for you.
To make things easier, grab a template to use for your design.
You can use a simple design. You don't have to purchase any fancy
templates for ebooks. People are looking to read your information
not get dazzled by the graphics.
Save that for your website.

So here you have the basics to start off with. So get your
articles together and visually picture what you want the layout
to look like and you are on your way.
Make sure you keep all the files in one folder, and you must name
the main page index.html or index.htm depending on your software.
Any external links should open up in another window.
Keep the navigation simple and easy. Give clear instructions and
give your readers a reason to keep your ebook and call it one of
their favorites.

MORE ON APOSTROPHES - Revision

Following on from last week's article about "your and
"you're", and continuing the revision for your e-book
writing, I now want to look again at the apostrophe, and in
particular at whether an apostrophe should come before or
after the "s".
An apostrophe is used in this case to show that someone or
something possesses something, and where the apostrophe
comes depends on how many people or things are doing the
possessing. Here are some examples:
"my brother's car" - another way of saying this would be
"the car belonging to my brother" - and as there is only
one brother being referred to here the apostrophe comes
before the "s".
"my colleagues' clients" - this means the clients belonging
to several, or at least two, of my colleagues (the
apostrophe comes after the "s", showing that more than one
colleague is being talked about here). Another way of
saying this would be "the clients of my colleagues" (though
that would be rather cumbersome).
In other words, the apostrophe comes immediately after the
person or persons being referred to: after "brother" -
before the "s" - if there's only one of them; after
"colleagues" - after the "s" - if there are two or more.
Where confusion sometimes crops up in an online context is
when someone's trying to persuade you to join an affiliate
program, for instance, by boasting that you'll have access
to a special "member's site" where members can find
information which is not available to non-members.
Putting the apostrophe before the 's' suggests that so far
they have only one member, which may not have been quite
what they meant to say... On the other hand, if they meant
you would have your own "member's site" for your personal
use, then they got the apostrophe right. It depends
whether they're talking about you, the single member, or
the whole group of members (plural).
People frequently make the mistake of adding an apostrophe
to a simple plural, when all that's needed is "s" on its
own. You see this often outside shops or restaurants, for
instance - "cabbage's", "hot dog's", "cold drink's" and so
on - when it should just be "cabbages", "hot dogs" or "cold
drinks". The test is to see whether the words "of" or
"belonging to" would be appropriate here.
Obviously nothing is belonging to a cabbage, and we aren't
talking about something which is "of the hot dog", so no
apostrophe is needed. In an online context, you could make
things easier for yourself by heading a webpage for members
with the words "Members only". Then there's no need for an
apostrophe, whereas if you were to head it "Members' page"
- i.e.. 'page belonging to the members' - you would have to
put one in.

Customers Are Prospects Too

Your customers already know you and trust you. It’s easier
to get more business from them than to get any business from
somebody who never bought from you. Their business is also
highly profitable because there's no advertising expense
involved.
Here are 3 ways you can increase the income you get from
your customers. All 3 are effective for marketing online
or offline ...and they cost little or nothing to implement.
1. Upselling
You don't have to wait until after making a sale to increase
the income you get from a customer. You can start while the
customer is in the process of buying for the first time.
It's called "Upselling". Here's how you can use it.
Collect the ordering information from your customer. Then
casually offer them an opportunity to upgrade to a better
quality product or service -- or to add another related item
to the order. Include a special price that's ONLY available
if the customer accepts it NOW.
It’s surprising how receptive a customer is to an attractive
offer when he or she is already in the process of spending
money. Most businesses I’ve surveyed report about 50 percent
acceptance of their upselling offers.
TIP: You can even include upselling offers on your web site.
For example, I recently ordered a software upgrade at a web
site. After selecting the item a pop up message asked me,
"Would you like to add (item) to your order for $(special
price)? This price is only available if you order now." It
worked. I answered, "yes".
2. Backend Selling
Many successful businesses make most of their profit from
backend sales -- selling other related products or services
to customers who previously bought from them. Once a person
buys from you it’s easy to get them to buy again.
If you don’t have other products yourself, look for
companies with products or services related to yours. Make
an arrangement to offer their products to your customers for
part of the profit.
On the Internet you can sign up with an affiliate program
offering products or services similar to your primary
product. Just announce the program to your customers and
include your endorsement. The affiliate program handles
everything else and pays you a commission.
3. Referral Selling -- Plus...
Do you have a system to get referrals from satisfied
customers? If not, you're losing a lot of profitable sales
you could easily get.
One way to get referrals is with a brief Customer Survey.
Send it by postal mail, email, fax or post it on a web page.
The one I use asks only 3 questions:
1. What did you like best about our product (or service)?
2. What can we do to improve the value of our product (or
service) for you?
3. Who do you know trying to solve (state the problem you
solved for your customer)?
Or:
Who do you know that wants to (state the benefit provided
by your product or service)?
The first 2 questions focus attention on the benefits you
provide. Your customer is more likely to volunteer referrals
when they're thinking about the value of those benefits.
You'll also gain something from the answers to the first 2
questions. The first question often generates a response you
can use as a testimonial (with your customer's permission).
The second question may provide an early warning of a
problem you need to solve - or alert you to an opportunity
you can exploit.
Start using Upselling, Backend Selling and Referral Selling
to get more business from your existing customers. You'll
produce highly profitable sales without spending money on
advertising.
